What to Do Near Keflavík Airport (If You Have a Few Hours or a Full Day)
Arriving in Iceland often means passing through Keflavík — but the area surrounding the airport offers far more than just a place to transit through.
Whether you have a short layover or a full day to explore, the landscapes around Keflavík and the Reykjanes Peninsula offer a raw, quiet introduction to Iceland — all within easy driving distance.
If You Have Just a Few Hours
If your time is limited, you can still experience Iceland without going far.
A short 20–25 minute drive will take you to Reykjanesviti Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in Iceland, surrounded by dramatic volcanic terrain and open ocean views.
Just nearby is Gunnuhver Hot Springs (approx. 25 minutes), where steam rises from the ground in powerful geothermal vents — one of the most striking landscapes on the peninsula.
If you prefer to relax after your flight, the Blue Lagoon is only about 20 minutes away, offering a calm and restorative experience.
If You Have Half a Day
With a few more hours, you can explore a broader part of the Reykjanes Peninsula without rushing.
Visit the Bridge Between Continents (around 20 minutes), where you can walk between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.
Continue to Brimketill Lava Rock Pool (approx. 25 minutes), a dramatic coastal formation shaped by the ocean.
For something visually unique, head to the Seltún Geothermal Area (35–40 minutes), known for its colorful earth, boiling mud pools, and rising steam.
If You Have a Full Day
With a full day, you can slow down and combine multiple stops into a relaxed route.
Start near Garðskagi Lighthouse (15 minutes), where wide ocean views and quiet surroundings set the tone for the day.
From there, explore the volcanic landscapes around Fagradalsfjall Volcano (30–40 minutes), one of Iceland’s most recent eruption sites, where the terrain is still evolving.
Return toward Keflavík in the evening and enjoy a slower pace in the harbor area, with local restaurants and coastal views.
Where to Stay
Staying in Keflavík means everything remains simple.
At Hotel Boli, you are just minutes from the airport while still within 15–40 minutes of some of the most unique landscapes in Iceland.
It allows you to arrive, settle in, and explore — without long transfers or unnecessary planning.
A Different Way to Experience Iceland
Keflavík is often seen as a starting point — but it can also be part of the experience.
With geothermal areas, volcanic landscapes, and the open coastline all within a short drive, it offers a slower and more grounded way to begin or end your journey through Iceland.
